The background to the Inquiry was a showing by the BBC on 19 August 2008 of a television documentary
called Pedigree Dogs Exposed. It was a hard-hitting piece of journalism written and directed by Jemima Harrison. It was aimed at those breeders of pedigree dogs who had ignored the adverse effects of inbreeding and particularly those who were breeding for extreme conformations. The United Kingdom’s premiere dog club, the Kennel Club, felt that it had been unfairly treated and complained to OfCom, the regulator of the UK Communications industry. At the time of writing, this dispute has not been settled.
Nevertheless, the BBC pulled out of its long-standing arrangement to televise Crufts dog show. Moreover, the public reaction was such that Dogs Trust, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals and the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals ended their support; and Pedigree Petfoods and Hills Pet Nutrition cancelled their sponsorship of the show. The Associate Parliamentary Group on Animal Welfare (APGAW) announced that it would hold hearings on the breeding of pedigree dogs. At the same time the Kennel Club combined forces with a leading dog charity, Dogs Trust, and announced an independent Inquiry into the breeding of all dogs.

Some breeders have tried to have the database been pulled down by the provider.

With lies, sent to the provider, they did their best to destroy what only can be seen as good for the breed.

I like to give you some quotes from emails that have to do about this subject.

A complaint sent to the provider of the Health database:

"I would like to advise you that Henny van den Berg has published confidential
medical information about my champion Griffon Bruxellois dog without my knowledge or consent."

First of all health information was sent to the administrator by the breeders of the dogs themselves. But what give you really something to think about is the fact that this so called "confidential information" is online to see on these complainers own club site?? How confidential is something if it has been online already for over a year ?

A quote from the email sent by the provider to the complainers:

"Note: the actual primary request is a bit absurd since the same information is freely available at other sites, from which atleast one seems to be co-owned / administrated by yourself."

Let's hope from now on we can spend our time on something positive instead of all these nonsense.

After the meeting we had today about the GriffonPlaza Health Database, we have decided to remove some result from certain dogs from the database because of misbehavior from some breeders/owners.

Some are scared off and did not dare to leave their dogs in our database. So sad this kind of breeders still excist.

Those who want to join GriffonPlaza Open Database should behave ethicly towards other breeders or scientist.

We advice all of you to be brave and do not let these people get a hold on you, there is nothing to be afraid of when you are open and honest.

Please know that our new way of thinking "being open in breeding" will fear many breeders who like to hide all kind of information.

If you get bullied or you need help, just write an email to giffies@griffonplaza.com and we will offer you help when needed. We have to hold our fort because being open is the only way for us to reach our coal "Breeding Healthy Dogs"

Database under attack.

We at GriffonPlaza take all efforts to present reliable and hand checked information as supplied to us by either breeders or owners. The entire design of our site is to promote openness and be of genuine assistance to breeders who wish to share their testing results to benefit the breed.
We are not interested in defending our database to any differing views, We promote breeders who have nothing to hide, as we believe it is beneficial for all results to be shared for the betterment of the breed.
Of course we realize this is scary to many breeders, scary because many are afraid to find out what is in their lines, they do not test, and others who are afraid their will be a lot of finger pointing towards them for being open. The oddest part is that those who we have met in Griffons who are afraid for finger pointing are often the one who do so. At least that is the experience of the moderators of this site.

Not surprisingly, we get lots of mails , mails about breeders who dogs are in the database, not about the test results but about how brave they are and how much respect they deserve for showing all their results to the world.

As this site only accepts voluntarily given , we leave everyone to his own as long as we are not attacked for no reason, we have the opinion there is no reason not to test or to share but if people do not want to join us we are not going to write world wide letters full of lies and gossip around to prove our point. Our point is already proved. Many breeds need help and testing, the heritage of those who did not test and certainly did not share the information they had in the breed. If so all the testing on different illnesses would not be needed nowadays. If it was true what these breeders said than the Griffon would be one of the most healthy dogs around, also that is not true. The Griffon
has many problems we should work on.

The last day’s the database has been under attack, attack by those who have assumed that the moderator got info about dogs that has been submitted by other than the breeder or owners themselves. These assumptions were grounded on nothing than false gossip and is only an attempt trying to bring those who try do good for the breed in discredit. Funny is that when they find out they were wrong they are not big enough to make apologies for their false assumptions but just go on with by bully others, crying they are bullied by us for having to share their info:) These people really turn the world upside down.

We have all bred sick dogs, most because we just did not know, there were no tests or the vets did not know about what was wrong with our dogs, our luck and that of many breeds is that there are test now available, we have internet that makes it so easy to care and share together so breeding healthy dogs will become much easier if you use the right tools for it.

Envy seems to be one of the biggest problems in the Dog World, envy can often be a reason not to test or not to share. If that person tests I will not, if that person shares I will not, if that person follows that protocol I will not use that protocol. When you read this I am sure you will be as surprised as I am but it is true!!

World wide breeders of pedigree dogs are under fire, in one country more than in the other. Not without reason. We have to prove to the world that we are willing to work together. The researches, who are working hard to provide us with information how we can carefully make combinations and breeders, by testing and sharing test information are all helping this science improve the dogs we produce. The time of sweeping things under the carpet and not talking about them are over, there are breeds who will run out of time to be fixed unless we start now. IT is time that breeding was about the DOGS themselves, not breeders glory, time to make the dogs health situation our first priority.

The following part is out of a letter that is going around, it is from breeders who are amongst other things, against sharing like we do and who are not so careful about the truth - as they should be.

“We love our dogs, we care for our dogs very well and sometimes we’ve
even been known to do without something ourselves so that the dogs
could have what we felt they needed. But, and this is a very big but,
when our dogs pay the mortgage, pay their own vet bills, can drive
themselves to the vet and make a myriad of decisions that we now make…
then, and only then, will they have rights as we do. We are their
caretakers and owners and we make the decisions, not them, and
certainly not someone across the world from us. We would suggest that
they take care of their own and we will do the same.”

An other shocking part out of the same letter is this:

“Remember, Hitler was nothing but a small town activist until he got a
good microphone. At first no one agreed with him, then they turned up
the volume and people started to listen. Before you know it a crazy
man was killing millions of people and controlling the lives of the
people who kept their mouths shut. Speak out and be heard or our
rights will be taken away and might not possibly return.
Let us know what you are thinking….there’s power in numbers.”

If this is not a case of argumentum ad Hitlerum I don’t know!! You know right away what kind of people these are, and here at Griffon Plaza we stand a long way from those who hide behind this nasty way while blaming others, like people who like to share, scientists etc. Let above words speak for themselves and make up your own opinion.

This database is an open database this means every dishonest attack will be published right here from now on. We have nothing to hide and already it is clear there are breeders in the world who feel and act the same. Use your own thoughts, not those inserted by others with agendas other than the health and wellbeing of the dogs they produce.

BonBonnetje tijdens de MRI scan

Vrijdag met BonBon en Silk naar de dierenkliniek den Heuvel in Best gereden voor verschillende testen die broodnodig zijn in ons ras. Beide hadden al hun ECVO eye test gehad en BonBon had in maart al met succes een harttest ondergaan.
Silk was hier toen nog niet dus die is voor de hart test komende maart 2010 aan de beurt gelijk met Muppie die ook nog haar MRI en HD foto's moet ondergaan.

Het heeft me verbaasd dat praktisch niet één fokker, die momenteel geregeld fokken, hun fokmateriaal test? Er komen toch verschillende ernstige afwijkingen voor in de kleine Griffons. Je moet er toch niet aan denken dat er over een paar jaar geen één hondje meer rondloopt dat geen gebreken heeft!

HD (meer over HD klik hier)
Door het praten met diverse fokkers over de gehele wereld, ben ik te weten gekomen dat ons ras er niet zo goed voor staat wat o.a. de heupen betreft. Onder de geteste honden zijn er slechts weinig die met een "vrij" uit de HD test komen.
Nu is een lichte graad van HD niet zo dramatisch voor een Griffon omdat het lichaamsgewicht niet zo hoog is. Doch dit mag nooit een excuus zijn om deze afwijking gewoon maar te negeren.

Een HD test is op z'n plaats in dit ras. En om een goede inventarisatie te krijgen hoe de stand van zaken er voor staan in ons ras, moeten dit wel officiële foto's zijn die door een panel van specialisten bekeken worden. Kosten 58,82 excl.btw + bijkomende kosten van de Raad van Beheer.

Patella Luxatie (meer over PL klik hier)

Een test, hoe het gesteld is met de Patella's van de hond is eenvoudig te controleren, wanneer u dat bijvoorbeeld gelijktijdig doet met de MRI, kosten Patella Luxatie test 17,61 excl. btw.
We hebben in dit ras niet de luxe om ieder hondje met graad 1 maar uit te sluiten van de fok maar we moeten wel weten hoe de populatie er voor staat en om de juiste keuzes te maken in de fokkerij is het testen ons enige hulpmiddel.
Een graad 1 paren aan een vrije hond is de beste oplossing om de situatie te verbeteren. Nog beter is natuurlijk twee 0/0 met elkaar te paren.

Een ECVO ogentest kost landelijk tussen de 30-35 euro incl BTW, deze kan alleen uitgevoerd worden door een oogspecialist.

Nu komen we eigenlijk bij het ernstigste probleem in ons ras Chiari-like malformation en syringomyelia.
Een probleem dat net als bij de Cavalier veelvuldig voorkomt! De cijfers zijn schrikbarend en zoals u al eerder hebt gelezen zijn sinds dit bekend is geworden in 2006 slechts een handje vol honden getest? Hoe kan dit toch? Hoe kan men zeggen van een ras te houden, ze fokken, de pups verkopen zonder te weten wat er in die wezentjes omgaat? Dat kan je met je geweten toch niet overeenkomen?

Er is nog te weinig bekend over hoe deze afschuwelijke afwijking wordt doorgegeven maar inventarisatie kan een hoop duidelijkheid verschaffen. Hoe meer honden er getest worden hoe meer er onderzoek gedaan kan worden. 1 en 1 is nog steeds 2.
Ondanks deze wetenschap zijn er nog mensen die twijfelen om hun honden te laten onderzoeken. Niet alleen hier in Nederland maar ook daarbuiten.
De MRI scan is duur, dat zal niemand ontkennen maar zolang de pupprijs nog ver boven het bedrag ligt wat de fokker kwijt is om een van zijn of haar fokdieren rondom te testen, kan geen fokker met goed fatsoen beweren dat het onbetaalbaar is.
Tenslotte wordt er van geen fokker verwacht dat alle dieren in een keer alle testen te laten ondergaan.

Een rekensommetje
Voor de benodigde testen komt het kostenplaatje er als volgt eruit te zien:

Patella Luxatie test 20 euro eenmalig
HD foto's 70 euro eenmalig
MRI scan 280 euro eenmalig (indien de scan wordt gedaan op de leeftijd van 2,5 jaar of later)
ECVO ogentest +/-35 euro jaarlijks
Alle prijzen in deze laatste berekening zijn incl.BTW naar de nu geldende prijzen.

Laten we zeggen dat het fokdier gemiddeld 5 maal een ogentest ondergaat en met prijsstijgingen in acht genomen komt dat ongeveer neer op 5 x 40 = 200 euro dat brengt het totaalbedrag wat een fokdier extra kost in zijn/haar productieve leven op 570 euro. Als dit een teef betreft mag u hier 5 nesten mee fokken dat is dus aan extra kosten per nest iets meer dan 114 euro. Waar praten we dan eigenlijk over? Het geld ligt niet op straat en fokken is duur maar dat is showen ook en als we dan 2 keer een show per jaar overslaan per dier hebben we het testen van een hond er al weer uit.

Knikstaarten
Om de overige kosten van een nest niet de pan uit te laten rijzen is het misschien ook verstandig dat fokkers openheid van zaken geven betreffende knikstaarten in de lijn. Hier wordt in ons ras veel te nonchalant mee om gegaan! Iedere fokker zou een hond met een duidelijke knikstaart uit de fokkerij moeten verwijderen en zich informeren welke andere afwijkingen samen kunnen gaan met de knikstaarten. Aan elkaar gegroeide voetzolen is een van de afwijkingen die voorkomen in nesten waar knikstaarten in de lijn zitten. Met deze honden mag beslist niet gefokt worden. In het artikel over knikstaarten kan iedereen lezen welke afwijkingen allemaal samenhangen hiermee. Als beide ouders geen uiterlijke kenmerken bezitten die wijzen op dit genetisch defect maar er wordt een pup geboren met een knikstaart, ingewanden die buiten het lichaam groeien, geen anus, scheve kaak etc. dan kunt u er vanuit gaan dat beide ouders dit gen dragen dus moet in ieder geval deze combinatie niet herhaalt worden. Openheid van de fokkers onderling kan een hoop leed en kosten voorkomen!! Kosten die weer opzij gelegd kunnen worden voor het testen van de fokdieren.

Nu keurmeesters zich in de toekomst meer moeten gaan verdiepen in de afwijkingen binnen een ras en ook de uiterlijke kenmerken hiervan moeten noteren en op de juiste wijze moeten kwalificeren zullen er wel meer mensen op de show verschijnen met briefjes waarin vermeldt wordt dat de hond de staart gebroken heeft en daarom een knik vertoont. Een staart breken kan natuurlijk altijd maar mocht u geïnteresseerd zijn in het aanschaffen van een familielid van zo'n hond of zo'n hond willen gebruiken voor een dekking, duikt u dan voor alle zekerheid even in de familiegeschiedenis van deze hond om te kijken of er geen knikstaarten voorkomen. Voorkomen is beter dan genezen. Controleer ook de voetzolen van de familieleden.

Zolang er nog geen open database voor ons ras is waar iedere fokker alle positieve punten en negatieve afwijkingen uit zijn of haar lijnen noteert moeten we zelf heel goed opletten met welke dieren we fokken willen we de situatie waarin ons ras verkeert niet nog slechter maken.

Test uw honden op bovengenoemde problemen en laten we dan samen proberen, door het uitwisselen van gegevens, dit bijzondere ras te bewaren voor de toekomst!!

Investigation of the presence of Chiari-like malformation and syringomyelia in stillborn Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Foetuses

Chiari-like malformation (CLM) is described as an occipital bone hypoplasia and is a condition that is prevalent in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS). It is thought to be an inherited condition that affects growth of the skull. The characteristics of the condition are a compression of the cerebellum which is pushed out of the foramen magnum. Many affected individuals also have syringomyelia (SM) which causes significant pain.

CLM is sometimes described as a condition that is due to altered development before birth, however no investigations have ever taken place to assess if changes in the skull are present at birth. Equally, it is not known if SM is a condition that can be identified in the spinal cord at birth. We have studied the development of the occipital bone and cerebellum in stillborn CKCS foetuses with the aim to discover if CLM/SM can be seen at birth and to begin to define what changes we see in the cells of these tissues. This work will also define the earliest stages at which CM and/or SM could be detected and diagnosed in CKCS.

Results

Anatomical investigations have shown that the occipital bone overlying the cerebellum has an abnormal bulge in the centre. These investigations also show that the cerebellum is compressed in CKCS foetuses at birth. However this compression is not yet sufficient to cause descent of the brain into the foramen magnum. The region of the compression in the brain corresponds to the region where we see the bulge in the bone. It suggests that the abnormal skull is compressing the brain. When we looked at the occipital bone in more detail, using sectioning, we saw that there was a region where there were more cells than normal – this was the region of the bulge. These cells were also immature – they had not formed proper bone. We looked at the part of the spinal cord nearest the brain but did not see SM. We will continue to examine the remainder of the spinal cord.

When we looked at the cerebellum, we also found that there were more cells in parts of the cerebellum. When we counted the numbers of cells that were dividing, they were statistically significantly increased. Usually if there are too many cells being produced, we see lots of cells dying. However we found there were fewer cells dying. Both the increased cell division and reduced cell death make the cerebellum bigger. We also saw that some cells in the cerebellum that control co-ordination of movement were also not properly formed. This all tells us that both the brain and the bone are growing too much and that as a result, some of the cells are more immature at birth than they should be.

This all points to this condition being caused by abnormal cell division. Importantly, it tells us that the brain and bone are not able to communicate with each other. In the normal situation, if the brain was growing too much, the bone should keep up with it. In the CKCS this relationship is lost.
